CWC RODEO TEAM HOPES TO BRING IN MORE POINTS AT THE THIRD RODEO OF THE SEASON
After what seemed like a long winter of practice the Central Wyoming College rodeo team has competed at their second competition of the spring season in Torrington at the Eastern Wyoming College rodeo.
“The spring season started off well for the men’s team,” said Drew Schrock, rodeo coach. “They tied for second and third at the Gillette College rodeo, where Brady Thurston won the steer wrestling, Teigen Finnerty placed second and Dalton Burgener placed fourth. This past weekend in Torrington we had more make it back to the short round but a few small mistakes and a couple bad draws on livestock cause us to come out of there with less points than what we had anticipated.”
At the EWC rodeo, Finnerty took third place in the tie down roping with a time of 10.8 seconds in the long go-round and 11.8 in the short go-round. Thurston had a time of 11.2 in the long go-round but dropped to tenth place after the short go-round where he received a no time.
Finnerty and Thurston also placed in the steer wrestling event. Thurston placed sixth overall with 5.7 seconds in the long go-round and 9.6 in the short go-round. Finnerty followed in seventh with 5.0 seconds in the long go-round and 10.6 seconds in the short go-round. Burgener also downed his steer in 5.0 seconds in the long go-round and 11.1 seconds in the short go-round placing him in eighth. Jace Breger placed 11th with 5.7 seconds in the long go-round; he received a no time in the short go-round.
“Teigen drew well in the short round and made a nice run in the tie down to finish third and was also the reserve all-round cowboy for the rodeo,” Schrock said.
In the breakaway roping, Kassie Kautzman placed fifth overall. Her time in the long go-round was 3.4 seconds; she came back in the short go-round two seconds quicker, finishing with 3.2 seconds.
“Kassie made two nice runs but only managed to gain some points in the long round of the breakaway roping,” Schrock said.
Timber Taylor also placed for the cowgirls in goat tying. In the long go-round she tied her goat in 7.5 seconds and in the short go-round she timed at 12.6 seconds, placing her seventh overall.
We will continue to work fundamentals, attitudes, and making sure that all the horses are working and feeling good before we leave CSU on April 6. I am really proud of this team and have really high hopes for them. They always work hard and have a lot of respect for their fellow teammates, which makes practice productive along with enjoyable. ”

The men’s team is currently placed fourth in the Central Rocky Mountain Region with 2155 points. Sheridan College is first with 3350, Gillette College is second with 2430 and Chadron State College is third with 2333.33.
