Central Wyoming College’s rodeo team is moving up on the leader board for the Central Rocky Mountain Region with seven cowboys sitting in the top ten regional standings.
Sophomore Coltin Hill is sitting first in the steer wrestling for the region and came in first at the Chadron State College rodeo this past weekend with 4.4 seconds in the long go-round and 4.3 in the short go-round.
“Hill is riding the nicest horse in the region in the bull dogging; he has been working really hard,” said Drew Schrock, rodeo coach. “It’s nice to see good things happen to good people. The whole team is feeding off that and it makes our practices stronger.”
Also in the steer wrestling, teammates Brady Thurston, freshman and Danny Huxtable, sophomore had a great weekend and both made it in the top ten for the CSC rodeo. Thurston had a time of 8.0 seconds in the long go-round and improved his time in the short go-round with 6.0 seconds putting him in fifth place overall. Huxtable placed eighth overall with 6.6 seconds in the long go-round and 10.7 seconds in the short go-round. For the region Thurston is in third place followed by freshman Dalton Burgener in fourth and Huxtable in eighth.
In the saddle bronc riding two team members made the top ten; Tanner Butner freshman placed second overall and Colton Miller senior placed fourth. Butner received a score of 63 in the long go-round and a 66 in the short go-round. Miller had a score of 64 in the long go-round and was bucked off in the short go-round and received a no score. In the regional standings Butner is in second place followed by teammate Shawn Butner sophomore in fourth and Miller in fifth.
“Tanner has had two consistent rodeos and the last weekend the draw got him but he made the best out of the stock that he drew,” Schrock said. “Brady has also had two consistent weeks and has proven that he is going to be a tough contender in our region.”
Freshman Sammi Harper placed eighth in the barrels with 17.07 seconds in the short go-round and improved her time in the short go-round with 17.03 seconds. Harper is currently in thirteenth place in the regional standings.
“I’m really proud of the team and the way they’ve been competing,” Schrock said. “I’m excited about their attitude and the way they are working together as a team; at practice and at the rodeos.”
Currently in the region, CWC is in fifth place for the men’s team with 720 points. Chadron State College is sitting first with 940 points followed by Eastern Wyoming College with 925. The women’s team is in ninth place with 105 points. Gillette College is in first place with 623.3 points followed by Lamar Community College with 595 points.
“I’m not disappointed in the way the women’s team is doing and how they have performed,” Schrock said. “They have some things they have to work on which they know; they are competitive and the draw always has something to do with how well they do at each rodeo.”
The team will travel to Sheridan, Wyo., Sept. 25-27 for the Sheridan College rodeo.
