Men’s golf team keeps a steady third place in the Region

Central Wyoming College men’s golf team is keeping a steady third place in the region as they travel to Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colo. for their next tournament.

The team just returned from their second tournament of the season. The men tied with host McCook Community College after the first round on Sept. 4. and trailed Eastern Wyoming College by three shots.

Robbie Harding, sophomore tied for first place with a score of 75 in the first round but fell short during the second round with a score of 75 putting him in second place individually with a combined score of 150.

Freshman, Braxton Schwartskoph placed eighth individually with a score of 81 on day one and 79 on day two giving him a combined score of 160. Teammate Jackson Roling, freshman was just two points from Schwartskoph with a total combined score of 162.

“I thought Robbie did a great job of hanging in there.  He had a chance to win going in to the last hole but just fell a little short losing to a guy from McCook who was on his home course,” coach Pat Rafferty said.  “I’m proud of how Rob has learned to grind and battle. With how he’s matured he’s going to be contention to win every week.”

First place for the men’s team went to EWC with a total score of 625; second place went to MCC with a total score of 639 and CWC in third place with a score of 656.

“Braxton continues to impress me with his attitude. He’s solid and doesn’t make many mistakes or beat himself,” Rafferty said. “He’s learning he can compete with anyone in the region on any golf course any week.”

Sarah Schroefel, freshman placed second individually, two shots back on the women’s side. On day one Schroefel had a score of 92 and the same on day two with combined total of 184. Also on the women’s team was sophomore Kristen Day, who had a combined score of 189; scoring 98 on day one and 91 on day two. Otero Community College is still in the lead for the women’s team.

“Sarah continues to impress; she’s been in contention in both tournaments this Fall,” Rafferty said. “It’s just a matter of time until she gets a win. Kristen Day hasn’t been on her game to start the Fall season but when she gets back on track her and Sarah will be a tough one-two punch and both will contend for individual honors. Ashley Sams has also been a pleasant surprise and gets better every week.”

“As a team we’re in contention and respectable in every tournament,” Rafferty said. “Robbie and Brax have been solid…Jackson Roling is contributing and proving himself to be a good number three.  But for us to win a team title those three need to continue to play well along with posting a respectable number four score.  We haven’t had that and we need a fourth man to step up for us if we’re going to get a team victory.”

The team is currently at their next tournament in Sterling, Colo.
