Comedy reigns in the first major production of the CWC Theatre Department’s season with Carlo Goldoni’s The Servant of Two Masters. Identities are mistaken, duels are fought and confusion reigns when the wily servant Truffaldino hatches a zany scheme to double his wages (and his meals) by serving two masters at once.
The Servant of Two Masters is the most famous example of commedia dell’arte, an improvisational theatrical form that flourished in Italy 1500-1750, and which influenced ballet, pantomime, circus clowns, puppet shows, Shakespeare, Moliere, musical comedy, Charlie Chaplin, the Marx Brothers, and television sitcoms. CWC is using a translation by Marco Lully, the foremost practitioner of commedia in the world today.
A cast of twelve will bring the play to life. Truffaldino is played by Tucker Hansen, a Theatre/Film major from Utah. The two masters are played by Courtney Olson, a Theatre/Music major from Riverton and Sean Thornton, a Theatre/Film major, also from Riverton. Other members of the cast are Hannah Thoman, Nathaniel Espositio, Andrew Thornton, Seth Siebersma, Kyriessa Lane, and Rachel Reckling.
