Central Wyoming College Offers Spring Classes for Gardeners and Aspiring Growers

Lander, Wyo. – As spring arrives, Central Wyoming College is offering two opportunities for community members ready to get their hands in the soil – whether they want a quick introduction to gardening or a deeper dive into crop production.

For those ready to really dig in, CWC is offering the Crop Production Practicum (CPP) I, a credit course running April 8 through May 15, with the possibility of continuing on to CPP II and III that run through the summer and early fall. The course, which is part of the Regenerative Food Systems program, provides students with hands-on skills in diverse fruit and vegetable crop production with an emphasis on soil health, organic practices, and regenerative growing principles.

In CPP I, students will explore early-season growing methods and techniques suitable for both field-scale and garden-scale production. The course includes learning modules, quizzes, and activities, combined with in-person field-based classes. Class and field sessions will be held Wednesday through Friday from 8 a.m. to noon at the Alpine Science Institute Farm, and will include off-site farm tours and guest speakers, giving students direct exposure to working producers and agricultural professionals.

Those interested in enrolling in the Crop Production Practicum can contact the CWC Lander Center at 307-332-3394 or Rustler Central at 307-855-2115 for registration information.

For community members who want to stretch their green thumb with a lighter commitment, CWC is also hosting a Seed Starting workshop on Sunday, March 22, 2–4 p.m. at the CWC Lander Center newly-constructed greenhouse.

The two-hour workshop will introduce participants to the basics of starting plants from seed and provide practical guidance to help gardeners grow their own produce at home.

“There’s growing interest in producing more food locally, and these opportunities help people take that next step,” said Ethan Page, Local Food and Agriculture faculty at Central Wyoming College. “Students will gain hands-on experience and learn from working producers in the region.”

Participants can register for the Seed Starting class online at: https://www.cwc.edu/tickets/lander/

Both classes are designed to support local food production, sustainable growing practices, and hands-on learning for beginners and experienced growers alike.
