RUSTLER SPOTLIGHT: CHEROKEE BROWN

Brown will complete her degree this summer and would like to open her own after care facility that deals with addiction, sexual assault, rape and other difficult situations people face.

“It’s what happens before addiction that I want to help with,” Brown said.

Brown was nominated by human services professor Wayne Montgomery.

“Cherokee is already involved in human services by volunteering for a number of community activities, all of which are in service to others. She was recently instrumental in getting the Indian Education bill passed in the Wyoming Legislature. Cherokee will be great in the Human Service profession,” Montgomery said.

Brown is a co-founder and board member of the Wind River Native Advocacy Center, an organization with a vision to empower Native American’s with a stronger voice in health, economic development and education which is done through community building, research, events and education.

Brown also lobbied for the Native American in Education bill. “It was a milestone in my life,” she said. “I was part of the thousand pieces to the puzzle and now that puzzle is complete. The bill passed and we’re very proud of that.”

In her free time Brown enjoys organizing community events, especially ones that her family can attend. She is also a member of the International club on campus.
