Student Spotlight - Ian Bell

Student Spotlight – Ian Bell

Growing up, Ian faced more than his share of challenges. Coming from a broken home where stability seemed out of reach. When he moved from Sheridan to Riverton for school, things began to shift. He found his footing surrounded by a supportive extended family that encouraged him to keep moving forward.

When it came time to choose a college, Central Wyoming College (CWC) just made sense. It was close to the family that grounded him, familiar friends were already attending, and his positive experience with dual credit courses made it an easy “yes.”

Now a CWC student and Resident Assistant, Ian is pursuing a degree in Computer Technology — a field that fits his natural curiosity and knack for problem-solving. In high school, he had already
proven his talent, interning for the school board and helping set up vital technology systems. But his professional dream takes that interest one step further: he hopes to blend his technical expertise with creativity as a stage technician, specializing in theater lighting and sound.

“My instructors have been awesome,” Ian says. “They’re always willing to help, they’re understanding, and they really motivate you to keep going.” He credits faculty like Matt Herr for their mentorship and encouragement, helping him stay focused on his goals.

Although Ian describes himself as an introvert, CWC has given him plenty of reasons to step outside his comfort zone. As an RA, he helps create a welcoming, supportive environment for his peers — a role that has helped him grow both personally and professionally. He especially enjoys the campus events, like game and movie nights, that make it easy to connect and feel part of the CWC community.

Outside of school, Ian is deeply rooted in Wyoming life. He loves the open spaces, mountain views, and quick access to the outdoors. He’s one of four siblings, with an older brother, an older sister, and a twin brother who’s just five minutes younger, and his family ties remain an important part of who he is.

Even with his drive and  determination, Ian’s journey hasn’t been easy. Balancing school, finances, and basic needs can be tough, but CWC’s support systems, especially TRIO Student Support Services (TRIO-SSS), have made all the difference.

TRIO is a federally funded program that champions access to higher education by providing comprehensive, holistic support to students. It enhances the academic and personal development of participants through tailored services such as academic tutoring, mentoring, financial aid counseling, and career development.

TRIO has been a lifeline for Ian, offering not only academic tutoring but practical support through resources like the Rusty Food Pantry. “It’s been a huge help,” Ian says, adding that having a friend who works in TRIO makes it an even more welcoming space.

Ian’s story reflects what we see every day at CWC: when barriers are removed, whether financial, academic, or related to basic needs, students don’t just persist, they thrive. With the encouragement of his instructors, TRIO, his family and the broader CWC community, Ian is well on his way to graduation and to bringing his unique blend of talent and creativity to the stage.
