Central Wyoming College Offers Food Safety & ServSafe Certification Course

Fort Washakie, Wyo.Building on the hands-on training offered through Central Wyoming College’s Culinary & Hospitality programs, the college will offer an upcoming Sanitation and Food Safety course (CULA 1505) designed to equip individuals working with food with the knowledge and skills needed to meet industry safety standards. The course is open to a wide range of participants—from restaurant professionals and food entrepreneurs to educators and home-based food producers—and is offered as part of the Wind River Recompete program. In partnership with the Wind River Sage Fund, this federally funded program aims to expand access to quality jobs, strengthen local economies, and remove barriers to opportunity for underserved communities across the region.

The 1-credit course will run April 13 through April 29, meeting Mondays and Wednesdays from 2–4 p.m. at the Frank B. Wise Business Center in Fort Washakie, with a Workforce Training session on Thursday, April 30.

This course explores modern food safety practices and current government standards used across the food service industry. Participants will learn how to prevent contamination, implement safe food handling practices, and maintain professional sanitation standards in any kitchen environment.

Students will also explore Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) systems, the hospitality industry’s preferred approach to managing food safety risks, and will have the opportunity to earn the widely recognized ServSafe Certification.

The course is ideal for:

  • Restaurant and kitchen staff seeking certification or professional development
  • Food truck operators and small food businesses
  • Home bakers, food producers, and cottage food entrepreneurs
  • High school culinary and family consumer science teachers
  • Community members interested in safe food handling practices

Course Topics Include:

  • Physical, chemical, and biological contamination prevention
  • Professional hygiene requirements
  • Monitoring time and temperature
  • Critical control points in the flow of food
  • Food safety management systems
  • Safe facilities and equipment
  • Cleaning and sanitizing procedures
  • Federal, state, and local agencies responsible for preventing foodborne illness

The course will be taught by Jenny Joyes, Hospitality and Culinary Instructor at Central Wyoming College.

Through Recompete, Central Wyoming College is bringing high-quality workforce training programs for students ages 25–54. These programs combine hands-on skill development with wraparound support services (for those under or unemployed), so students can focus on building their future without unnecessary obstacles.

Adults ages 25–54 may qualify for scholarship and financial aid through the Recompete program, which helps participants return to school, gain new skills, and advance into stronger career opportunities at little or no cost.
