Central Wyoming College Welcomes Annette Benn Thornton as New Theatre Instructor and Director

Annette Benn Thornton named theatre instructor and director at Central Wyoming College

RIVERTON, Wyo. — Central Wyoming College has appointed Annette Benn Thornton as its new theater instructor and director.

A respected educator, director and arts advocate, Thornton brings decades of experience in theater, communication and education to the college. She is certified by the Wyoming Professional Teaching Standards Board in theater, English and communication and spent 20 years at Riverton High School, where she built a distinguished career inspiring students on stage and in the classroom. Thornton is well known to Fremont County audiences, having directed more than 50 productions during her career at Riverton High School.

During her tenure at RHS, Thornton served as director of the theater department for 20 years and coached the speech and debate team for 19 years. She directed multiple large-scale productions annually while teaching English, public speaking and theater courses. Her work earned statewide and international recognition, including in 2015 when one of her productions was selected as one of only eight worldwide to perform on the Mainstage at the International Thespian Festival.

Beyond the classroom, Thornton has remained active in community theater and the arts as a playwright and creative consultant, helping foster artistic collaboration throughout the region.

“Annette is well known in the community for her theatrical productions and as an educator,” said Dr. Kathy Wells, vice president of academic affairs. “She brings a wealth of knowledge, creativity and recognition to her new role at the college. Central Wyoming College is fortunate to welcome Annette as a member of our faculty.”

Thornton’s recent work as guest director for CWC Theatre’s spring 2026 production of “The Secret Garden” demonstrated both artistic excellence and strong community impact. The production welcomed 1,748 audience members — the program’s highest attendance in years — including 615 students who attended through coordinated outreach and partnership efforts.

“There is a real opportunity to build something that goes beyond the traditional expectations of a two-year program, something that challenges students at a higher level and prepares them to create, lead and innovate within today’s industry,” Thornton said. “I’m excited to step into this role and continue building that momentum with the team.”

In addition to her theater background, Thornton worked early in her career at the Wyoming Honor Farm, where she trained and handled K9 units for contraband detection in a high-security environment.

Thornton’s passion for storytelling, student mentorship and the performing arts makes her a strong addition to Central Wyoming College’s faculty and performing arts program.

“With Annette Benn Thornton joining the cast at CWC, you might say, ‘Everything’s coming up roses,’” said Dr. Mark Nordeen, dean of liberal arts and agriculture.
