Alumni Spotlight – Daniel Lopez-Carrillo

Daniel Lopez-Carrillo began his educational journey at Central Wyoming College’s Jackson campus during the COVID-19 pandemic. While the world was shifting online, Daniel embraced the flexibility of remote learning to complete his Associate of Arts in Communication. Despite the distance, he found connection and warmth through the supportive staff and faculty at CWC Jackson—something he now sees as a defining part of the campus culture.

After graduating, Daniel transferred to the University of Wyoming in Laramie to finish his bachelor’s degree. The transition from online classes to an in-person university experience was thrilling and affirming, helping him grow both academically and personally. Upon returning home to Jackson, he reconnected with CWC—this time as a professional.

Today, Daniel serves as the Summer Bridge Coordinator, advises students, and teaches bilingual education classes. His entry into teaching began organically after attending a bilingual class and finding inspiration in the classroom dynamic. When he learned the course wouldn’t be offered over the summer, he offered to step in. Though initially nervous, Daniel quickly found that his bilingual skills, empathy, and experience as a former student allowed him to create a welcoming and effective learning environment. His ability to connect with students—many of whom are older or returning to school—has become a signature strength.

Daniel credits faculty members like Megan Cassidy and Christy Pyles for shaping his student experience. He especially appreciated their supportive teaching styles and their willingness to go above and beyond to make students feel seen and valued.

Now, as an educator himself, Daniel brings that same mindset to his work. He encourages new and returning students not to be intimidated. “Taking that first step is already a big deal,” he says. “If you show up, you’re already making progress.” Whether he’s sharing time management tips, offering guidance through the college process, or simply showing up with kindness, Daniel is deeply committed to helping others succeed.

Looking ahead, he’s considering pursuing a master’s degree in education and continuing his path in higher education. His story is a powerful example of how CWC Jackson can serve as both a launching pad and a home base for students from all walks of life.
