Central Wyoming College Offers WY LEO Qualification as Part of Rocky Mountain Justice Academy
Riverton, Wyo. — Central Wyoming College (CWC) is offering Shoot The Wyoming LEO Qualification on Saturday, Sept. 27, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Shoshoni Rifle Range. This course allows participants to experience the same annual handgun qualification that Wyoming law enforcement officers complete.

The class is taught by Cody Myers, CWC’s Director of Campus Security and a POST-Certified Firearms Instructor. Myers, a CWC alumnus, brings extensive law enforcement and security experience to his instruction.
Designed for pistol shooters at the intermediate or above skill level, this hands-on class prepares students for the WY LEO annual handgun course of fire. Students will then shoot the actual qualification to finish the day. Participants must bring a reliable center-fire pistol, strong-side holster, three magazines, a magazine holder, and 300–400 rounds of ammunition. Students are also encouraged to bring food, water, sunscreen, and other essentials.

CRMJ-2545 RJT in: NRA CCW
This course teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to carry a concealed pistol for personal defense. The NRA CCW Course is intended for all individuals regardless of previous shooting experience or NRA affiliation. This course gives you direct instruction from NRA-certified instructors from beginning to end and will be conducted in a classroom and on a shooting range.
A Growing Program in Firearms Education
This training is part of CWC’s Rocky Mountain Justice Academy (RMJA), which has developed one of Wyoming’s most robust offerings in firearms education, concealed carry, and law enforcement training. Since 2015, CWC has offered 48 NRA-certified classes including Basic Pistol, Concealed Carry, Home Safety, Defensive Pistol, Shotgun, Reloading, and Instructor-level certifications.
To date, more than 220 students have trained through CWC’s NRA courses, with 70% of participants being women—double the national average of 36%. In 2024, three women earned certification as NRA Basic Pistol Instructors through the program.
CWC firearms courses emphasize safety above all else. The NRA’s three core safety rules are taught and reinforced on the range, alongside instruction that progresses from simple to advanced shooting techniques. Classes move step-by-step, beginning with benchrest and standing positions before advancing to defensive pistol scenarios, including drawing from a holster, timed qualification shooting, and judgment-based drills.
Facilities include the Rocky Mountain Justice Academy classroom (SC 010, Student Center basement) and the Shoshoni Rifle Range, equipped with CWC’s mobile trailer containing targets, stands, and supplies. The college can provide institutional firearms, including six Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm EZ pistols and six Ruger 22/45 pistols with holsters and magazine holders, though many students bring their own equipment. Students provide their own ammunition.

Leadership Voices
Dean of Liberal Arts & Agriculture Mark Nordeen, praised the growth of the program:
“At CWC, we see firearm education as both a constitutional responsibility and a public safety priority. By combining NRA-certified instruction, law enforcement-style training, and advanced simulation tools like our Virtual Firearms Training System, we are building a culture of safe, proficient, and responsible firearm use. It’s not just about training officers—it’s about serving our communities.”
Nordeen also noted the academy’s broader mission:
“Our Rocky Mountain Justice Academy is unique in Wyoming. Whether you’re preparing for a career in criminal justice, seeking concealed carry certification, or simply looking to improve your firearm safety and proficiency, our programs offer the highest standards of instruction, delivered by experienced professionals.”
Integrated Justice Education
The RMJA is a cornerstone of CWC’s Criminal Justice degree programs, offering both Associate of Arts (AA) and Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degrees with law enforcement options. Instruction comes from practicing attorneys, police officers, and retired law enforcement professionals such as Andy Hanson, Cody Myers, Jim Carey and Mark McDonald, who provide advanced training in defensive pistol and use-of-force decision-making.
Through this integrated approach, students gain both academic knowledge and practical training, preparing them for successful careers in criminal justice or further study toward bachelor’s degrees.
