RUSTLER SPOTLIGHT: SHAYLEE KETELHUT

Portrait of Shaylee Ketelhut

Shaylee Ketelhut will graduate this May with an Associate of Science degree. This fall she plans to attend the University of Wyoming where she will continue her studies in health science and also in psychology. Currently, Ketelhut is deciding which degree she would like to pursue: health science or psychology.

“I really never knew anything about psychology,” Ketelhut said. “I took my first psychology class this year and within a week I loved it so much I decided to switch my major.”

Ketelhut said that biology really helped in her psychology class, giving her a better understanding of psychology. Ketelhut said she has two options for her future: get a masters and doctorate in psychology to become a psychologist or go into the medical degree program to become a fetal surgeon.

Her interest in fetal surgeon came when her cousin died shortly after being born because of a tumor.

If someone had known that she had that tumor they could have done the surgery she needed and her survival rate would have been much greater. ”

Ketelhut completed all of her pre-med courses at CWC and plans to continue taking classes at UW in medicine. She said CWC was a smart place for her to start financially especially since her goal was to become a medical doctor.

“The professors here really care about the students,” she said. “They helped me grow as a person and really gave me a lot of knowledge.”

Ketelhut was nominated by her club advisor, Laura Phagan.

“Shaylee is uplifting and supportive to those around her,” Phagan said. “She is a devoted student not only to her studies but to her work and clubs on campus. She is a true role model and has been a great asset to CWC these past two years.”

Ketelhut is a resident assistant and a lab assistant for biology and chemistry. She is also part of the entrada club, National Society of Leadership and Success and the INBRE (IDEA Networks for Biomedical Research Excellence) program.

In her free time, she enjoys reading, dancing and spending time with friends. She also enjoys teaching children how to dance.
