CWC presents: 'Peter Pan'

CWC presents: ‘Peter Pan’

actors on stage

Actors will be flying high for the first time during Central Wyoming College’s (CWC) production of “Peter Pan” for the next two weeks in Riverton. With a rental contract with global theater production company ZFX Flying Effects, Joey West’s production will provide new and exciting stage technology for the show’s audience featuring a rigging system that allows actors to be flown around the stage on small wires attached to harnesses worn under costumes throughout the play.

“The owner of ZFX, Robert Dean, and his crew came out to help set up and train our crew on how to use the new system safely,” said West. “I’m pretty sure this is the first time this theater has had people flying around it.”

While the flying system offers a new element of excitement for the production, it also provided a challenge right out of the gates. “I figured out quickly that, due to the potential risk of damage, costume rental companies weren’t willing to supply costumes for actors who were flying,” said West. “So we were able to get rentals for everyone except for Peter, Wendy, John, and Michael, the characters who fly, and had to look locally for someone to help with their outfits.”

Fortunately for West and crew, the first lady of Riverton, Kara Hancock, who happens to be handy with a needle and thread, offered to step up and craft the four flying costumes needed for the show. “Kara has been amazing for us with these costumes,” said West. “The Peter Pan outfit is incredible. It’s got leather and a bunch of other materials she put together to make it. I’m always amazed at the local talent we’ve got in this little town.”

Kadie Crook, Bennett Rosenthal, and William Pierson took a break high above the set change going on underneath them during rehearsal for CWC’s Peter Pan Wednesday in Riverton.

In the spirit of the story of Peter Pan, most of the cast is made up of actors who are too young to be enrolled at CWC just yet. Kadie Crook, 16, of Riverton, is excited to play Wendy because of the character’s edgy spirit. “I like Wendy because she’s got a know-it-all attitude and an adventurous spirit,” said Crook.

William Pearson and Bennett Rosenthal, who are 12 and 9 years old playing the roles of John and Michael Darling, both expressed excitement to be flying in the production. “The flying is my favorite part of the show,” said Pearson. “But we’re still getting used to being up high and the harnesses.”

Madison Orr practiced being hoisted through the window on the set of Peter Pan Wednesday in Riverton. Orr, who also played the part of Maria Rainer in last year’s Sound of Music, was excited for the play’s new on-stage flying effects. “The heights don’t scare me at all,” said Orr. “I actually think it’s really fun.”

CWC theater student by way of Casper, Madison Orr, is playing the lead part of Peter Pan in this spring’s production. Orr, who is becoming seasoned at playing the protagonist role after having played Maria in last year’s “Sound of Music” show, says she’s confident at this point of rehearsals. “I imagine there’ll be some opening-night jitters, because that’s just how it goes, but we’ve rehearsed a lot and we’re still gaining confidence with full run throughs,” said Orr. “Hook and I play off each other so well. That’s been one of my favorite parts of this show. The flying too, the flying is really fun.”
