SPEECH TEAM FARES WELL AT SEASON OPENER

The Central Wyoming College Speech and Debate team from its first tournament of the season at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs with plenty of reasons to be optimistic about the rest of the season.

Returning student Riley Moore, who was the team’s most successful competitor a year ago, continued to demonstrate her prowess as a speaker by placing third in persuasive speaking. Moore was the top community college student in the event, and brought home the team’s first trophy of the year (see photo).

Freshman Daryon Baumberger, who came to CWC from Lead-Deadwood High School in South Dakota, narrowly missed out on a trophy of her own by placing fourth in After Dinner Speaking. The After Dinner Speaking event is one in which students write their own persuasive or informative speech with the goal of making the audience laugh while educating them at the same time.

Baumberger was second among community college students and first among novice students in this event which is traditionally difficult for newcomers to collegiate competition.

In addition to her individual speaking event Daryon also competed in Parliamentary Debate with teammate Rachel Hofer. The two were recognized as the 16th and 18th place novice speakers at the tournament respectively, while fellow Lead-Deadwood graduate Jordan Barthel was the 11th place novice debate speaker.

Next up for the team is the Pioneer Trails tournament at Casper College Oct. 11-12, where the team looks to continues to improve on the success of the season opener.
