Gratitude Week: Keyarra Bassett

Gratitude Week: Keyarra Bassett

Every time I am asked to list things important to me, my family is always one of the first things I write down. So, it should come as no surprise that they are what I am most grateful for during these trying times. Today though I am focusing on one in particular, my mom.

My mom is one of the most supportive people. It didn’t really matter what I wanted to do; she was there to help me. I remember telling my mom that I wanted to join a language competition after I had taken one year of Spanish. Not only was she all for it, but she also helped me be at all of the practices. When I was voted in as a captain of my high school swim team, she was ecstatic. My mom was at almost every meet, and she always brought enough extra snacks so that the whole team could have some.

She is also extremely caring. As a family, we went to my older sister’s basic military graduation. My mom was hyper-aware of what my sister might need. She had a tide pen so my sister could get stains in her uniform out, or a lint roller to get off dog hair. Not only was she super attentive to my sister she was also really aware of special moments. She made sure everyone who wanted to be in a moment was there.

My mom has helped me through some hard times as well. When the pandemic first put us into quarantine, I was not happy. I was losing my senior year of high school, and I was stressed about my grades. One rough night I was sitting at my desk with all of my stuff strewn around, and I was frustrated with an assignment. My mom had come to get me for dinner, and when she saw the state I was in she sat down and talked me through the assignment. She had me explain the assignment while I found my point of frustration. Then she helped me troubleshoot on how to fix the problem.

She does little things like that every day, and it makes my life so much easier. I doubt that she even notices that she is helping half of the time. I am immensely grateful for everything she does. From the big things to the little things, I would not be where I am today without my mom.
