STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES CELEBRATE FIRST GENERATION STUDENTS
Nov. 8 marks the 52 anniversary of the Higher Education Act that was signed by LBJ in 1965. The Central Wyoming College TRIO program will have information about their programs in the CWC library Nov. 8 from 10 am-2pm. In part, this will be a celebration to recognize first-generation students.
The idea is to make TRIO programs visible that work with first-generation students and to recognize first-generation students, faculty and staff. First generation students often struggle with a dual identity, who they are at home with their family and culture and who they are as students. We strive to acknowledge the value and importance of their achievements in education and want them to know that being a first generation student is something to be proud of. ”
Deryle Matland, program manager for Student Support Services
The concept of “first-generation” students was introduced into federal policy by the TRIO community in 1980, according to the Council for Opportunity in Education.
First generation students can pick up a sticker at the table on Nov. 8 from 10am-2pm to celebrate their success. Other programs such as Student Support Services, Upward Bound and Talen Search will also be there handing out information and answering questions about their programs.
