CHANCES OF COWBOYS QUALIFYING FOR CNFR REMAIN HIGH

One rodeo remains in the season for the Central Wyoming College rodeo team. Chances of some rodeo team members making it to the College National Finals Rodeo in June remain high.

“We’ve had a really good season and the team has been performing well,” said Drew Schrock, rodeo coach. “The team doesn’t need to do anything different; just work out a few things from the last rodeo and continue making progress through practice.”

At the Casper College rodeo the past weekend the team took a hit in the steer wrestling event; an event that usually places three CWC cowboys in the top ten. Only one cowboy, Kyle Choate, made the top ten. Choate had a time of 6.3 seconds in the long go-round and received a no time in the short go-round.

“As a whole they all did really well. I would say that the draw affected the outcome for a few more of our guys this weekend than we would have liked,” Schrock said. “That is part of rodeo. They all understand that making the best possible run or ride on the animal that is drawn is the most important thing and to make one run at a time. They are competing well and their horses are working well.”

In the Central Rocky Mountain Region steer wrestling leader boards three CWC cowboys are in the top five. Teigen Finnerty is in the lead for the trio with Brady Thurston in fourth place and Dalton Burgener in fifth place.

In the tie down roping two cowboys places in the top ten. Thurston placed ninth with a time of 11.0 seconds in the long go-round and 20.7 seconds in the short go-round. With a time of 10.7 seconds in the long go-round and a no time in the short go-round, Choate placed tenth overall.

Thurston also placed ninth in the saddle bronc riding. He received a score of 59 in the long go-round and a no score in the short go-round. Thurston is currently in fifth place on the region leader boards.

Josee Vogel placed second in the goat tying. With 6.9 seconds in the long go-round and 7.4 seconds in the short go-round, Vogel was only .4 seconds from placing first. Vogel is a transfer student from the University of Wyoming who had to sit out the first three rodeos of the spring season due to collegiate regulations. She transferred to CWC in January and has been accepted into the nursing program.
