In honor of first-generation day on November 8th, we'll be sharing stories from our first-gen students, staff, and faculty this week. We're incredibly proud of your accomplishments and we love that you are in our Rustler family! #firstgeneration #makeyourway
I am most proud of the independence I've gained through being a first-gen student. I had to figure out a lot of things by myself, but now I have the tools and experience to help others in similar positions. Most of all, I'm proud of the fact that I'm building a future for myself. ”
What does it mean to you to be a first-gen student?
Being a first-gen student means that I made it, despite the obstacles. It means I've achieved more than what was expected of me.
What challenges do/did you encounter as a first-gen student?
The biggest challenge that I faced was financial hardships. I didn't know how to apply for financial aid or a job until I started college.
What advice would you give to future first-gen students?
Keep at it even if it isn't perfect. Getting c's doesn't make you a failure. Ask for help! There's no shame in asking for help, which it's from tutors, professors, counselors, etc.
