Assistant named as new rodeo coach
January 1, 2012
Andrew “Drew” Schrock has been selected as the head men’s and women’s rodeo coach at Central Wyoming College.
Schrock, who has been interim coach since Rick and Lynn Smith left the program to coach in Arizona, was chosen following interviews with three finalists last week.
Schrock has been the farrier instructor for Central’s equine program and had helped out informally with the rodeo program for years. Last year he was officially recruited as the assistant.
“We shouldn’t miss a beat,” said CWC’s Executive Vice President for Academic and Student Services Jason Wood. As interim coach, Wood said Schrock did a good job retaining successful Rustler rodeo athletes and has recruited finalists from the National High School Finals Rodeo, held last week in Rock Springs.
A College National Finals Rodeo qualifier in timed events and a member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, Schrock was selected over two other finalists, Tarleton State University assistant coach Charlie Gorzalka of Clearmont, Wyo., and Andy Carter of Ellsinore, MO, who was head coach at Three Rivers College and Iowa Central Community College.
In addition to being interviewed by a CWC screening committee, Wood received recommendations on the coach selection from members of the CWC Rodeo Booster Club who had been invited to public presentations in addition to luncheons with each candidate.
Schrock will be assisted by Traci Hinman, a recent CWC graduate who was on the successful Rustler women’s team that came in second at the CNFR in June. He will also hire another assistant, Wood said.
CWC is host of the first fall college rodeo for the Central Rocky Mountain Region. The Rustler Rodeo Roundup is set for Sept. 14-16 at the Fremont County Fairgrounds in Riverton.
