Five Rustlers Recognized by Region IX

Five students and the men's basketball coach received recognition during the NJCAA DI Region IX tournament last week.

After the women's team made it to the semi-finals and were beat by Western Nebraska Community College, Region IX recognized outstanding players during the tournament and the season. Three Central Wyoming College players from the team were named; two for All-Region Basketball team and for All-Tournament team and one for All Defensive team.

Sophomores Jolanna Sazue from Pine Ridge, S.D., and Kiara Skinner from Cody, Wyo., both made the All-Region Basketball team and the All-Tournament team.

"Both of these athletes are very deserving of this; all year they were consistent and brought that competitive edge, which helped them stand out," Steve Barlow, Athletic Director said.
In the 2014-15 season, Sazue averaged 12.4 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. Skinner averaged 10.2 points and 5 rebounds per game.

Teammate Stephanie Smith from Mountain View, Wyo., made the All-Defensive team. Standing 6'6" this sophomore led the Nation in blocks with 166 overall.

"Her presence on the court changed the dynamics of the game, both offensively and defensively," Barlow said.

One player on the men's team, sophomore Bryce Canda from Portland, Ore., made First Team All-Region IX. Canda averaged 19.3 points and 6 rebounds per game, on the season.

"Bryce is a tenacious competitor, great teammate and respected leader," Barlow said. "He leads with what he does on and off the court and is one heck of a ball player."

"Each of these student athletes are deserving of the recognition they received by other teams in the region," Barlow said.

The men's head basketball coach, Pat Rafferty, received coach of the year for NJCAA DI Region IX North sub-region. This is Rafferty's second year at CWC. Rafferty, originally from Buffalo, Wyo., started his coaching career in 1981 as an assistant at Eastern Montana. He soon became the interim head coach after the death of the Eastern Montana head coach. Rafferty has coached for other colleges around the United State including University of Louisville, University of Idaho, Drake University, Grayson College, Casper College and Midland College.

"Coach Rafferty did an outstanding job guiding this team to a successful season in a very competitive region in the NJCAA," Barlow said. "Our entire coaching staff is dedicated to helping our students succeed on the court and in the classroom.
