Rookie CWC parliamentarians fare well at first speech meet
Central Wyoming College Speech and Debate teams, coached by new forensics director Josh House, had success at a tournament this past weekend at Colorado College.
“It was the first ever parliamentary tournament for both teams, and despite competing against two - and four-year schools featuring competitors with prior high school and college experience, CC performed very well,” House said.
The team of Garret VonKrosigk and Mike Mathews won four debates, and were one victory away from advancing to elimination rounds and winning an award, he explained. The duo defeated a team from the University of Houston, two teams from Colorado Christian University, and a Northwest College/Colorado College hybrid team.
In the seventh round of the tournament, in which they defeated Colorado Christian University, both VonKrosigk and Mathews were awarded perfect scores. Out of 46 teams at the tournament there was only one other team to have a round in which both speakers achieved perfect scores, House said.
The team of Ben Griffin and Danielle Gray defeated teams from Colorado State University at Pueblo and Northwest College and showed significant improvement in their scores from the beginning of the tournament to the end.
“The squad looks forward to building off of this success at our next tournament at Northwest College on November 9 and 10 where we will be traveling three parliamentary debate teams and competing in multiple individual events,” House said.
