The Central Wyoming College debate and forensics team beat out top programs at a national tournament this past weekend at the University of Central Missouri, placing third in debate sweepstakes.

CWC earned the honor by placing high in both parliamentary and Lincoln-Douglas debates, said Coach Jeremy Christensen, who is re-starting the intercollegiate activity at Central this year. He said his team bested top programs from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, Belmont University, Truman State University and six other colleges and universities.

In the novice division of parliamentary debate, the team of Nick Esposito and Sean Linch advanced to the semi-final round where they lost to the eventual tournament champion from Belmont University. The team of Katie Brooks and Amber Ezell-Bowman also reached the semi-final, losing a close decision to El Paso Community College.

Additionally, Esposito earned the top novice speaker award in novice parliamentary debate. In Lincoln-Douglas debate, Andrew Christian went undefeated through preliminary rounds advancing to semi-finals where he was scheduled to debate teammate Brooks. With a higher seed, Christian advanced into finals where he lost to a University of Nebraska – Lincoln debater.

In Lincoln-Douglas debate, Christian placed second, Brooks third and Linch fourth.
Central travel to Northwest College in Powell on November 11-12 and hosts a tournament on campus December 9-10.
