Geology Field Excursions

GEOL 2200 – Geologic Field Excursion. 2 credits
August 26-30
A field excursions around the state of Wyoming with the University of Wyoming Department of Geology. Areas to visit include Casper Mountain, Yellowstone, Tetons and Green River. Topics include rock types, tectonics, geologic time, fossils, stratigraphy and surface processes. Participants must be in good physical condition and be willing to live in sometimes primitive conditions. Field excursions include several miles of on-foot exploration each day. Separate field trip fees apply ($75 course fee includes transportation; $50 cash fee collected at first meeting for meals). Students are responsible for their own outdoor equipment and for making arrangements for missing  other classes Aug. 30.

This course may be repeated for a maximum of five credits applicable toward graduation.
Prerequisite: Completion of GEOL 1100 recommended but not required.

GEOL 1240 – Geology of the Yellowstone-Teton Region.
Sept. 23-26; Organizational Meeting Sept. 15 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in CW 117.

1 credit - This is a field-based course examining the geologic history of the Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. Emphasis is placed on recent geologic history including volcanism, glaciation and mountain building processes. Several aspects of the ecology of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem are also included. Field trip-based course; special field trip fees apply. This course may be repeated for a maximum of two credits applicable toward graduation.

This year, the class travels through Cody, the Beartooth Mountains and central Yellowstone (including Old Faithful).  We will be staying in the cabins inside the park at Mammoth.  Moderate hiking is required each day.  Because this course is sponsored by student activities, the fee is reduced to $75 (includes transportation, lodging and lunch).  Students are responsible for their other meals and for making arrangements for missing other classes on Sept. 23 and 24. Required text is available in the bookstore.

GEOL 1020 – Geology of Wyoming: Volcanoes. 1 credit
Nov. 2-Dec. 1
This course examines the basic theories, concepts and assumptions used in geology, focusing on the incredible natural geologic laboratory of the state of Wyoming. This offering focuses on the diversity of volcanoes in Wyoming, including Yellowstone.  Required field trip required on Sunday, Nov. 21

This course may be repeated for a maximum of four credits applicable toward graduation.
