What is my “account key” and where do I find it?

Your account key is your 7-digit CWC ID number and can be found on your CWC ID card. It can also be found on certain correspondence you received from CWC. If you still need help, contact the IT Helpdesk.

I’m locked out of my account. What do I do?

For security reasons, your account will be locked after 5 unsuccessful tries entering your password. If the IT Helpdesk is open, call or stop by and someone can unlock your account immediately; otherwise, your account will unlock itself in 15 minutes.

I’m in my on-line class in WebCT but I don’t know how to maneuver around the class. How do I access the Discussion Board and participate in discussions? How do I submit my assignments? How do I email my instructor?

Click on this link: http://mediaserv1/webct/index.htm   It is a very informative tutorial and should answer your questions.  If you still have questions, it would be best to contact your instructor as each instructor sets up his/her own class.

I’m trying to log in to the computer and get the message “you are using an incorrect user name or password.”

Make sure you are using your 3 initials (entered in lowercase) and 2-digit birth month and 2-digit birth day for your user name. Your default password is a capital “W” and a small “y”, plus your 7-digit CWC ID number (Wy1234567). Make sure you are using the number “0” and not the letter “o” for any numbers.

If you have changed your password, be sure to key it in EXACTLY as you originally entered it. Letters are case sensitive. If nothing works, try resetting your password yourself through WebMail or WebAdvisor or call the IT Helpdesk for help. To reset your password, you must know your 7-digit CWC account number.

I’m trying to change my password but I get the message that I was unsuccessful.

In order to CHANGE your password, you must know your current password.  (If you do not know your current password, you must RESET your password using the CWC Password RESET page and know your CWC student account number.

To change your password, make sure you are using your 3 initials(entered in lower case) and 2-digit birth month and 2-digit birth day for your username.  When entering your new password, make sure to follow the rules listed on the CWC Password Change Page.

Your password must be at least 6 characters long and complex (contain 3 of the 4 items listed).  You may not use any part of your name or your birthday in your password.  It cannot be a previously used password; however, you may “modify” an old password in some way to make it acceptable.

When confirming your new password, be sure to key it in exactly as you just entered it.  If you are still having problems, call the IT Helpdesk.

I have forgotten my password.

If you do not know your current password, you must RESET your password using the CWC Password RESET page in WebMail or WebAdvisor and know your CWC student account number.

When confirming your new password, be sure to key it in exactly as you just entered it. If you are still having problems, call the IT Helpdesk.

I cannot log in to WebCT, WebAdvisor, or WebMail.

You should have access within 24 hours of registering. If you have had access before, be sure you are correctly typing in your user name and password. You may not be able to access these accounts if there is a server problem. If that is the case, try again later. If you still can't get in, call the IT Help Desk.

I cannot log in to WebCT but I can access WebAdvisor or WebMail.

Make sure you are using the correct username and password. It should be the same username and password you are using for WebMail and WebAdvisor.
If you recently registered, it may be that your WebCT account is not yet set up.
Have you changed your name since your WebCT class was set up? Contact the Helpdesk.

I am logged into WebCT but I cannot see my classes.

If this is the start of a new semester, your classes will not be available until the first day of class. If class has started and you still can’t see your class, contact the Helpdesk. If you have added a class, it may be that we just haven’t had time to add your class to your WebCT account.

I am logged into WebCT, I can see my class, but there is just an empty shell when I click on my class.

This is a case where the instructor has not yet inputted the class information into WebCT. Contact the Helpdesk or your instructor.

I am logged into WebCT and trying to access my on-line class. I am told I am entering an invalid password.

There are actually 2 types of classes in WebCT. One type of class is where the instructor’s class actually resides ON WebCT. The 2nd type is where the instructor’s class is ACCESSED THROUGH WebCT but is actually listed on the Internet. It is in this 2nd type of WebCT class that asks you for a password or access code.  It will be different from your CWC user name and password. Most of the time, these passwords or access codes can be found in the front or back of your textbook, perhaps under the CD if there is one with the textbook. If you still have trouble finding these codes or accessing the class, you need to contact your instructor.

I am tying to log in to WebCT and I get a message saying “403 Forbidden” or “Access Denied” error message.

One possible cause is an Internet Explorer 6 update installed by Windows Update. Some users found this problem could be resolved by changing an Internet Explorer setting as follows:

  1. In Internet Explorer, from the Tools menu, select Internet Options.
  2. Click the Advanced tab.
  3. Under Browsing, clear the checkbox for Show friendly HTTP error messages.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Restart the Internet Explorer browser.
If this problem persists after changing this setting and restarting your browser, it may be caused by spyware or deceptive software on your computer. Read more about spyware and WebCT

I am a CWC student having problems with my personal computer/laptop. Can you help me?

Sorry, but the IT staff cannot help with problems on a student’s personal computer. Ask around campus and there are lots of students that are “computer geeks” that are usually glad to help out. If that doesn’t work out, you will need to contact a computer service company.

The internet connection in my room doesn’t work. What do I do?

Even though residents of the College’s on-campus housing are provided network connectivity in their rooms or apartments at no additional cost to their housing charges, access to this service is disabled until the resident signs the CWC Network Activation and Use Agreement  form and returns it back to the Housing Director’s Office. This form, along with other important information, can be found in your CWC student handbook.  If you have had internet service and it is not working now, contact the IT Helpdesk.

How can I convert a document created using Microsoft Works into a Microsoft Word document?

Resave the document as a .rtf (rich text format) file.  Then open the document in MS Word (may need to change file type to “all files.”).

I want to use the on-line tutoring available from Smartthinking.com and it is asking for a user name and password.

Uername: 2007cwcmain

Password: achieve

After you login the first time, you can set up your own account.

How long will I have access to my WebAdvisor account after I graduate/leave CWC?

Indefinitely. If you don’t remember your user name or password, call the Helpdesk at 1-877-CWC-DESK (292-3375).

Is wireless access available everywhere on campus?

Students with a wireless capable computer can access the Internet from the CWC Riverton campus at the following locations:  Pro-Tech, COTC, Fitness Center, Student Lounge, Food Court, Library, Music Department, Art Department, RAP Theater and Tutor Center.  Wireless connectivity is also available at the CWC Lander Center. CWC provides "Internet-only" access to those using wireless connectivity.

Can I access my WebCT account, WebAdvisor or email from off campus?

Yes. Go to the college website at www.cwc.edu and then choose Online classroom-WebCT, WebAdvisor, or Webmail. from the Online Service section on the upper right section of the website. CWC outreach centers have their own home pages and these online services can be found under “Select a quick link” in the upper right corner of the page.

What is the difference in the delivery methods?

WEB: These courses are delivered over the Web (Internet) and require access to a computer with an Internet connection.  Some courses may also require specific software.  Computers and Internet connection are available on the Riverton campus and selected outreach centers. Contact the instructor for more details.

ICN: (Interactive Classroom Network): Students meet in a classroom and the instructor has real-time interaction with students located off campus. Instructor may or may not be at the same location as the students.

Video Courses (DVD): Actual classroom lectures are recorded onto a DVD. Students can check out the DVDs at the CWC Library or the Lander Outreach Center. If these locations are inconvenient, call the Distance Education Technician at 1-800-735-8418, ext. 2124 or 1-307-855-2124.

TV (Telecourse): These courses are aired on Wyoming Public Television and CWC’s Rustler TV two times per week. CWC’s Rustler TV is only available over Bresnan cable service in Riverton and Lander on channel 5.  Air times are available with the course syllabus or the full schedule can be viewed at www.cwc.edu/rustlertv    If you do not have cable TV or you live outside the broadcast area, recordings of the telecourses can be leased from RMI Media by contacting them at 1-800-745-5480 or at http://www.rmimedia.com. Telecourse recordings can also be viewed at the CWC campus Library.

WYSE Terminals

Can I use a CD or a floppy disc on a WYSE Terminal?

No, but you can use a flash drive.

I am trying to get to WebAdvisor from the CWC homepage and get a “System error detected” message.

Closing the browser and reopening it will usually correct the problem.

There is a message saying “this terminal is locked by a certain user.”

Go to the top of the screen and click on the terminal bar’s “X” and answer “yes” to disconnect their session.

I cannot access my staff (or student) account in WebCT.

Make sure you are using your staff user name and password to access your staff account and your student user name and password for your student account.

I can access my remote desktop on campus but not off campus. Why?

If staff require remote access to their CWC computer/files while OFF campus, they must fill out a “Remote Access” authorization document and have it reviewed and signed by their supervisor before off-campus access can be granted. The form can be found on public docs.

To use RDP on any computer running Windows XP, click on Start/All Programs/Accessories/ Communications/Remote Desktop Connection.  Then type in remote.cwc.edu in the dialog box and click on “connect”.

I’m getting numbers instead of the alphabet on my laptop.

On some laptops, it is the Function/Scroll key combination that toggles the numbers off. (This may be the Function key+F12 combo) Numlock may also be turned on.

I can’t get my laptop screen to show on the regular monitor.

On many Gateway laptops, the Fn+F4 key combination is the fix.

On some models, it might be the Fn+LCD or CRT/LCD key combination or Fn and (button looks like two monitors) combination.

I’m getting too much spam in my WebMail. What can I do to get less spam?

Go to the Barracuda Guide in Public Docs (Information Technologies/User Docs/barracuda-guideline.doc) and follow the instructions to adjust spam filter settings.

I want to send email to all CWC employees but can’t.

You probably do not have permission to do so. You can, however, email “CWC Announcements” to post your information/announcement.

Should I ever lock my workstation?

You should lock your workstation any time you leave your desk for more than 5 minutes. Press the key combination of Windows Key (between Ctrl and Alt) + L to lock. Unlock with your password.

Should I turn off my computer before I leave work?

That is your preference. If you choose to leave it on, reboot every couple of days so that your system stays current with critical updates. The IT Dept does ask that you leave it on Tuesday nights as that is the night weekly critical updates are automatically installed.

I have a problem with my computer (or other equipment) and the problem is not “critical” (may include things like missing icons, need program installed, can send but not receive emails, misc. questions, etc.). What is the best way to report the problem?

If your issue does not require immediate assistance, please submit a work order using “Track-It!”.  This is accomplished by clicking on the CWC Helpdesk icon on your desktop.  If you would like assistance entering your work order or are missing the CWC Helpdesk icon, please contact the IT Helpdesk.

What process does Track-It (the CWC Helpdesk icon) use?

After you submit your work order, a technician will be assigned to assess the problem. He/she may correct the problem or schedule an appointment. You will be notified via e-mail when the work order is completed and will be asked to complete a survey to let us know how we are doing.

How do I fill out the Track-It form?

  1. Click the CWC Helpdesk icon on desktop
  2. Click on “Add work order”  listed on left side of page
  3. Summary: briefly describe the problem
  4. Priority:  select an appropriate time frame for a solution from the drop-down box.    How soon do you need a solution?
  5. Department:  select appropriate department; if it is an IT problem, select “Info Tech Dept.” If it is a more specialized IT problem such as an e-mail, website, or DataTel problem, select “Info Tech Special Services.”
  6. Building/Location:  select your location from the drop-down box (this ensures the appropriate technician is assigned.) Once you select a site from the drop-down box, a technician will automatically be assigned.
  7. Region/Room/Division:  select one from the drop-down box
  8. Description:  explain the problem in further detail
  9. Submit:  click on Submit button in lower right corner

How do I learn my user name and password to access my accounts?

Once you turn your paperwork in to the division assistant, he/she will turn it over to HR. Once your account is set up, the division assistant will notify you that your account is ready and give you access instructions.

I signed my contract and was notified by the division assistant that my account was set up. I had access to it before, but now I am denied access.

Did you sign a Statement of Compliance along with all your other paperwork? Once you sign your contract, you are given a 30-day grace period to turn in any remaining paperwork. If anything is missing, your account will expire at the end of the grace period and you will be denied access to the CWC network. To gain access, please contact your division assistant.

How can I convert a document created using Microsoft Works into a Microsoft Word document?

Resave the document as a .rtf (rich text format) file.  Then open the document in MS Word (may need to change file type to “all files.”).

I am logging on to the computer and getting an “access denied” message.

Please contact the IT Helpdesk and we can verify your access.
