The Medical Transcription AAS degree is designed to prepare graduates to work as medical transcriptionists for hospitals, physician’s clinics, and other health care organizations. This highly specialized field requires use of computer technology and transcription equipment to listen to recordings by physicians and other healthcare professionals. Students will learn to transcribe and edit a variety of medical reports regarding patient assessment and treatment. Because medical transcriptionists must possess strong English and listening skills, be detail oriented, and be familiar with personal computers, this program will emphasize medical terminology, anatomy, English grammar, and spelling.
According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, employment of medical transcriptionists is projected to grow faster than average for all occupations. Some medical transcriptionists telecommute from home-based offices.
